What size Scroll Rods should I use for my project?

What size Scroll Rods should I use for my project?

My recommendation is to use a Scroll Rods that is at least 2” longer than the width of your fabric. So If your fabric is 26” Wide by 12” High I would suggest Scroll Rods that are at least 28”. This way you have at least a inch on either side of your fabric for your fingers to fit to scroll it up. With enough space for the fabric you will get better tension.

On my example my fabric is 18.5” wide the Scroll Rods I have it on are 22” you can see that there is plenty of space on both sides between the Side Bar and the fabric. You can see that the fabric tension is really nice and tight.

EZ Stitch Benefit... one of the best thing about the EZ Stitch Tape is that putting your project on and off the Scroll Rods so easily.

So let me show you what happens when you put too long of fabric on shorter Scroll Rods.

Now in this example my fabric is 18.5:” wide and I am going to put it on 18” Scroll Rods. I place one edge of the fabric all the way against the Side Bar, the other edge is overlapping the Side Bar a little bit.

As I scroll it up you can see how wrinkled the fabric becomes on the Scroll Rods. No matter what I do the fabric tension is not going to be even because the fabric does not have the space it needs. Once I have it all scrolled up and try to get tight tension I am only getting in certain places. The sides are tight but the middle is super saggy.

Now we are going to try 20” Scroll Rods this will give me about 1” on each side of my 18.5” fabric. As I scroll up the fabric you can see how smooth it is on the Scroll Rods. Once you have the fabric scrolled up  and tighten down all 4 knobs.

Now push down in the middle of the fabric, This will cinch up the fabric on each of the Scroll Rods, making it wrap tighter around them. Scroll the fabric back up around each rod tighten the knobs down and push down in the middle again. Do this until you have the tension that you like. Now that your fabric has enough space on the scroll rods you will be able to get the nice tight tension you want.

Happy Stitching – Donnett

Hello! This is probably a very stupid question but here it goes...

What is the recommended distance between the upper and lower scroll rods when working on a 13 x18 fabric or is it strictly a personal choice how much area you want exposed?

We have Side Bars that are 6", 8", 10", 12 and 16" For a project 13 x 18 I would probably go with either the 8" or the 10" . The closer the scroll rods are to each other the tighter the tension you will have on your fabric. Here is a link to all of the side bars we carry. https://www.embroidery.com/ez-stitch-side-bars?efi...

Hi Tamara,

We recommend that you use rods that are 2" wider then your fabric. So if the fabric is 18" wide, then it would be good if you used 20" rods. But if you wanted more extra room, then you could go wider then 2" on the rods. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Have a nice day!
